Hurricane Season Preparation: Flood Risk Checklist
2026-03-27 · 6 min read · Preparation
Before Hurricane Season Begins
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, but preparation should start weeks in advance. Begin by reviewing your flood insurance policy to ensure coverage is adequate. Note that there is a 30-day waiting period for new NFIP policies, so purchasing coverage during an active storm is too late.
Document your belongings with photos and video. Store these records in the cloud or in a waterproof container. Create a home inventory list with estimated values for filing claims if needed.
Property Preparation
Clear drainage paths: Clean gutters, downspouts, and yard drains. Ensure water can flow away from your foundation. Install check valves in plumbing to prevent floodwater from backing up through drains. Elevate valuables: Move important documents, electronics, and irreplaceable items to upper floors or high shelves. Seal basement walls with waterproofing compounds and consider a battery-powered sump pump backup.
Emergency Kit and Plan
Prepare a go-bag with water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, and copies of important documents. Know your evacuation routes and have a family meeting point. Register for local emergency alerts through your county's notification system.
During and After a Storm
Never walk or drive through floodwater. Six inches of moving water can knock you down, and two feet can float a vehicle. After flooding, do not enter your home until authorities confirm it is safe. Document all damage before cleanup for your insurance claim. Check your area's flood risk profile to understand what type of flooding is most likely in your community.
